Coronavirus Cases May Rise To 39,000 In Lagos State – Health Commissioner

Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Akin Abayomi has said coronavirus cases in the state may rise to 39,000.
Abayomi at a briefing on Friday urged people to adhere to the social distancing advice of the state government to check the spread of the disease.
He said, “Our mathematical modelling shows that the worst-case scenario is that we may see up to 39,000 cases in Lagos, but if everyone practices good social distancing, the figure will be limited to 13,000.

JUST IN: Medical Supplies Donated By Chinese Billionaire, Jack Ma To Fight Coronavirus Arrives Nigeria

Medical supplies donated to African nations by Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group, have arrived Lagos.
The shipment, which came through an Ethiopian Airlines flight, carried 5.4 million face masks, 1.08 million detection tests, 40,000 sets of protective clothing and 60,000 sets of protective face shields.
Receiving the donation on Tuesday in Lagos, Firihiewot Mekonnen, General Manager, Ethiopian Airlines, Nigeria, said, “We appreciate the donation of the Jack Ma Foundation and the generosity of Jack Ma.

LASUTH Organises Free Medical Outreach For Orthopaedic Patients

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, says it will organise a free medical outreach, in collaboration with an Indian based hospital, Lokmanya Hospital, for orthopaedic patients in Lagos State.


Anifowoshe Bello, LASUTH Public Relations Officer, said in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, that patients with spinal cord injuries and joint replacement would benefit from the programme.

Student in Nigeria develops cure for breast cancer

A female student of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, Sandra Musujusu, has developed an alternative treatment for breast cancer.
 scientific breakthrough might lead to a lasting solution in the treatment of breast cancer prevalent among women world over.
This was made known on Tuesday in Abuja when the World Bank Education Director, Dr Jaime Saavedra Chanduvi with his team visited the University as part of his assessment tour of the 10 African Centres of Excellence (ACE) centres.

Adeyemi seeks N60m for cancer surgeries

Mobolaji Adeyemi
IN 2012, Mobolaji Adeyemi, 37, a public speaker and graduate of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology at the University of Ibadan, was diagnosed with malignant cancer of the mouth and neck (Mucoepidermoid carcinoma).

He went through surgery at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, had  a neck dissection and entire upper jaw and dentition removed.

Medical personnel, patients flee hospital as Lassa fever kills two

Activities at the Federal Medical Centre,  Idi-Aba,  Abeokuta, on Tuesday  were paralysed as medical personnel and patients deserted the hospital after Lassa Fever claimed two lives in the hospital.
The victims were an assistant nursing officer, Abolanle Adesuyi  and a serving corps member, whose identity could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Scientists grow mouse eggs from stem cells

Japanese scientists said Monday they had grown mouse eggs entirely in the lab, then fertilised them to yield fertile offspring, a scientific first cautiously hailed by experts in human reproduction.
The technique – which involved coaxing stem cells into becoming mature eggs – was still much too risky and controversial to be reproduced in humans, commentators said.
