Medical personnel, patients flee hospital as Lassa fever kills two

Activities at the Federal Medical Centre,  Idi-Aba,  Abeokuta, on Tuesday  were paralysed as medical personnel and patients deserted the hospital after Lassa Fever claimed two lives in the hospital.
The victims were an assistant nursing officer, Abolanle Adesuyi  and a serving corps member, whose identity could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Scientists grow mouse eggs from stem cells

Japanese scientists said Monday they had grown mouse eggs entirely in the lab, then fertilised them to yield fertile offspring, a scientific first cautiously hailed by experts in human reproduction.
The technique – which involved coaxing stem cells into becoming mature eggs – was still much too risky and controversial to be reproduced in humans, commentators said.

13 people under Lassa fever observation in Delta

The Delta Government has said that only 13 out of the 55 people that had contact with the doctor who died of Lassa fever in the state are still under observation.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr Patrick Ukah, in a statement on Friday in Asaba, said the 13 people would be closely monitored for one more week.

Lassa fever: Group to buy rats from Lagosians

In a bid to avert incidents of Lassa fever and other vector-borne diseases in Lagos State, a non-governmental organisation, Phosguard Fumigant Limited, in partnership with the state government, has introduced a bounty, ‘Kill rats, make money.’
Under the project, rodents in the state will be bought by the NGO after they had been killed using hi-tech chemicals and equipment that would make their decomposing bodies non-infectious, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
