UNILAG to re-open on May 2, lists conditions for re-admission of students

The senate of the University of Lagos(Unilag) has directed each of its returning students to complete an undertaking form and get it notarized as a condition to be readmitted into the institution from May 2.
This is contained in a statement by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information Unit, Mr Toyin Adebule, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos. NAN reports that the university’s senate had on Friday April 8, ordered that the university be shut down indefinitely, following days of students’ protest on campus.

The students had claimed that there were inadequate municipal facilities on campus which included poor electricity and water supply. The students alleged that the management was not sensitive to their plights and ,therefore, decided to embark on a peaceful protest on campus for them to the attention of the university management.

According to the statement, the senate at an emergency meeting on Friday, April 22, directed that full academic activities would resume on Monday, May 2. It added that in preparation for the resumption, students were expected to adhere strictly to all the guidelines posted to the university’s website.

It also directed them to down load the undertakings and the indemnity form. The guidelines include: a directive that students must complete the undertaking form and get it notarized. “Also, parents and guardians are to complete the parents’ indemnity form. “The completed undertaking form which must be notarized as well as the parents’ indemnity form must be submitted at the various departments and a clearance obtained,” it said.

The statement added that the clearance would be required to gain access into examination halls on May 9 when examinations will commence. According to it, all students accommodated in the halls of residence are to obtain clearance from the departmental officer. It noted that such clearance must be presented at the halls of residence to gain access into the rooms from Monday, May 2.

It added that students were expected to visit the university website from Friday, April 22 and complete the clearance process on or before Monday, May 2. “Examination will commence from May 9. Consequently, students are expected to generate their examination dockets and ensure they are duly endorsed by their course advisers between Monday, April 25 and Monday, May 2.

“We want to emphasise that no student will be readmitted without completing the above process,” the statement said. According to the statement, the university on its part will endeavour to provide electricity in the various halls of residence between the hours of 7a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.

It noted that the boreholes in the hostels would continue to provide water supply to the students until normal supply from the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC) resumed.

It also said that examination would commence on Monday May 9 and urged all the students to confirm their examination time table from the various faculties and departments.
