For the past twelve days, our country has witnessed massive protests by youths in different cities, which were ignited by widespread disenchantment with the gross human rights abuses including torture, extortion, harassment, intimidation and even extra-judicial killings of Nigerians by members of the disbanded Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS).

At least 15 people have been killed, including two policemen, since protests against police brutality erupted in Nigeria this month, according to Amnesty International on Monday.

Anger over abuses by Nigeria police’s notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) forced the government to scrap the unit, but protests have continued and snowballed into calls for sweeping changes in the West African powerhouse.

The Federal Government has deployed soldiers in several strategic locations in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The PUNCH observed that the deployment began around 10 pm on Sunday barely days after the military high command announced that it would commence the ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’.

While policemen cordoned off parts of the Three Arms Zone, Ralph Shodeinde Street, soldiers were stationed at strategic parts of the Goodluck E. Jonathan Expressway through AYA Roundabout to the headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

School Reopening: Only JSS3, SS2 Students Allowed To Resume On September 21 – Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Government has announced that only JSS3 and SS2 students will be allowed to resume school on Monday, September 21, 2020.

The Commissioner for Education in Lagos State, Folashade Adefisayo disclosed this in a statement on Sunday through the Head, Public Affairs, Ministry of Education, Kayode Abayomi while revealing plans for a new 2020/2021 Academic Session resumption for public and private schools.

ECOWAS halts single currency launch

The Economic Community of West African States has postponed the launch of its planned single currency, Eco.

The body agreed to maintain a gradual approach for the launching of the currency.

ECOWAS explained that a new date for the launch would be announced later.

China opens 5G-covered road for testing of self-driving cars

A 5G-covered road for testing self-driving cars was formally opened in Baohe District of Hefei City, east China’s Anhui Province on Thursday, welcoming the first batch of passengers.

The 4.4-km-long ring road will be open to both self-driving vehicles and ordinary vehicles.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed that it “spent N30,540,563,571.09, representing 84% of the N36.3 billon public funds and donations received to respond to COVID-19 between 1st April, 2020 and 31st July, 2020, leaving the balance of N5.9 billion.”

The Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris stated this in response to the Freedom of Information request dated 10 August, 2020 and sent to him by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Connected Development (CODE).
