Controversy over N32m raised to save cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed sparks outrage on Twitter

Nigerians are taking to social media to show their displeasure about an upsetting report of an alleged fraud case surrounding the sum of N32m raised from the public to save cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed.

28-yr-old Mayowa, a graduate of University of Lagos and an HB SS patient was diagnosed with bilateral Ovarian Mass Carcinoma, as stated in a diagnosis result sheet from the Reddington Hospital.

A fund raising initiative to save Mayowa’s life recently took the centre stage on social media and about N32m ($100,000 dollars) was said to have been raised so far by gofundme.com online platform in order  to ensure the treatment of the poor cancer patient.

Among those who popularized the campaign on social media is popular Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu who visited the once Mayowa to cheer her up. Miss Aimakhu on her Instagram page called on well meaning Nigerians to come to Mayowa’s aid.

However, drama ensued when an unverified message went viral stating that donations were complete and people who tried to donate to the Nigerian bank account were unable to as a block had been placed on credits into the account.

“#SaveMayowa is a scam” because doctors had classified her case as terminal and did not release her medical records to any institution abroad. Every attempt to reach Mayowa’s family has proven abortive as at the time of reporting this story.
