The lady, Blessing Nwokpa, alleged last week that she had been abandoned after being impregnated by an EFCC officer (names withheld), following her refusal to abort the seven-month pregnancy.
This is just as authorities of the commission mandated the EFCC operative to pay N10,000 monthly to his pregnant girlfriend as part of upkeep.
Last Friday, Vanguard reported that the expectant mother was homeless after she was allegedly beaten and thrown out by her lover from his Fadeyi abode.
Vanguard was reliably informed that EFCC would be meeting with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria that is handling the matter, with a view to settling the issues between its operative and his estranged girlfriend.
‘She was not our staff’
Investigation, according to sources at EFCC, revealed that Nwokpa was never its permanent, casual or contract staff as she claimed.
A source said: “Investigation reveals that she sells recharge cards opposite our office and is a single mother of two.
“That is, however, not justification for whatever wrong was allegedly done her. We are well disciplined and also have respect for the Rule of Law and for women.”
It was also gathered that an officer, superior to the accused operative, gave Nwokpa N15,000 during one of her visits to the Ikoyi office.
The source was, however, quick to clarify that the money was not meant for abortion, but was given to her on compassionate grounds.
When contacted, the commission’s Head of Internal Affairs, South-West, Mr. Michael Olaremi, confirmed that a letter was received from the Legal Aid Council on January 30, officially bringing the case to the commission’s knowledge.
He said: “The chairman has directed that the case be investigated and on our part, the operative was mandated to pay the pregnant woman N10,000 monthly.”
