An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos State on Wednesday intervened and saved the 10-year-old marriage of an alcoholic wife.
The President of the court, Mr Olu Adebiyi, had after several adjournments and interventions successfully resolved the differences between the couple.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the husband, Mr Hakeem Mabadeje, 53, who resides at Oguntuga Street, Eyita in Ikorodu, had in April approached the court seeking the dissolution of his marriage to Jarinatu.
Mabadeje told the court that he could no longer cope with his wife’s drinking habit and demanded dissolution of the marriage.
Adebiyi said:“This marriage has taken a new shape after the wife had pleaded with the court to save her marriage.
“She also promised to sign an undertaking that such a disgraceful conduct (drunkenness) will not repeat itself.
“I hereby urge both of you to go home and continue in love and peace.’’
Jarinatu, 48, who was overjoyed that the rift had been resolved amicably, thanked the court’s president and other judges for saving her marriage.
Mabadeje, a trader, had earlier told the court that his wife was addicted to alcohol.
“She drinks to the point of unconsciousness; she has turned me to an object of ridicule in the neighbourhood.
“I am fed up, I am no more in love with her,’’ the husband said.
