NYSC bars pregnant women, nursing mothers, PG students from service

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has barred pregnant women, nursing mothers and students engaged in postgraduate studies from enlisting in the national service across the country, until they are free to participate effectively.
Rising from a two-day pre-mobilisation workshop for the 2015 Batch “B” NYSC programme, held in Kaduna, Director-General of the NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, stated that the exemption of pregnant women and nursing mothers, as well as post-graduate students from national service was because they would not be able to undergo the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC.

JAMB: Unilag rejects 59,000 candidates

University of Lagos has rejected about 59,000 candidates who applied for admission into the school through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
This was irrespective of the fact that majority of the students scored above the Board’s cut-off mark.

The Gabonese government have denied claims that Barcelona’s  Lionel Messi  was paid €3.5m (£2.5m) to visit the country to take part in a ceremony at one of the venues for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Messi, who has yet to link up with his  Barcelona team-mates on their US tour, was pictured at the weekend in the country’s second largest city, Port-Gentil, where he helped to lay one of the first stones for the planned 40,000-capacity venue.

Siasia invites more players for Congo

Following his side’s slim victory over the Congolese U-23 national team, Samon Siasia has invited five additional players to boost the Dream Team’s effort to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics qualifiers. The Nigerian side defeated Congo 2-1 in Port Harcourt on Sunday with a brace from Junior Ajayi,  while the second leg is due in Congo in a forthnight.

Immediate past National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd), has sworn that he never maltreated nor took part in maltreating President Muhammadu Buhari when he, as military Head of State, was removed in a 1985 coup, as being erroneously alleged.
He said: “I always respect and dignify my seniors and those in positions of authority whether in service or after. Though a young officer, I was reluctant to be among those that arrested him. And I was not.

Chris Brown barred from leaving Philippines over concert row



American hip-hop star Chris Brown was barred Wednesday from leaving the Philippines after a prominent religious group alleged he reneged on an agreement to perform at a 2014 concert. The 25-year-old Grammy-winning R&B artist, who performed in Manila on Tuesday, must satisfy the government there is no basis to file swindling charges against him before he can depart, the immigration bureau said.
